SANTA CLARA, California: To expand its share of the lucrative "AI PC" market, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched a new series of artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors for business laptops and desktops this week.

In a press release, AMD said the new chips could be available in HP and Lenovo platforms starting in the second quarter of 2024.

AI-enabled PCs can run large-language models and apps powered by the technology directly on the device instead of the cloud.

Its latest Ryzen PRO 8040 Series was built for "business laptops and mobile workstations" while its AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series was a desktop processor for business users, AMD added.

As consumers look to upgrade their systems with AI-capable products, the PC market is betting on introducing AI PCs for its recovery.

The advent of generative AI technology has increased the demand for advanced semiconductors that can be used to develop and run complex AI programs.

AMD faces intense competition from Intel and AI chip front-runner Nvidia, considered the leader for graphics processing units (GPUs) in the market for AI PCs.

In January, AMD introduced the Ryzen 8000G Series of desktop chips, which can deal with the heavy processing requirements of AI-based tasks.

On the same day, Nvidia unveiled its AI PC chips, the "GeForce RTX SUPER" desktop GPUs.

Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung will release AI laptops featuring its technology, Nvidia added.

In January, Intel also said it expects to "ship approximately 40 million AI PCs in 2024 alone."
