PTA, Nokia Pakistan Hold Four-Day Masterclass on 5G and Beyond: Shaping the Future of Connectivity

A four-day Masterclass on “5G and Beyond: Shaping the Future of Connectivity” was held in Islamabad from February 17 to 20. Organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Nokia Pakistan, the event brought together over 60 industry leaders, policymakers, and academics to discuss the transformative potential of 5G technology and enhance cross-border digital cooperation.
PTA Chairman, Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman, described 5G as a gateway to innovation and economic progress while welcoming telecom experts from Malaysia. He noted that Malaysia, already launched 5G and is advancing towards 5.5G, offers valuable insights for Pakistan’s 5G deployment. He also announced that Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction is scheduled for April or May, acknowledging the delays in rolling out the technology.
Malaysian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dato’ Mohammad Azhar Mazlan, spoke about the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) role in fostering international partnerships, talent development, and advancing 5G adoption to build a skilled digital workforce.
Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasized the role of 5G in economic growth and digital transformation, calling the masterclass a “pivotal step in Pakistan’s digital ambitions.”
Minister Khawaja highlighted ongoing internet challenges in Pakistan, assuring that the upcoming spectrum auction in April would help resolve challenges and improve 4G and 5G services. She also announced the arrival of the world’s largest submarine cable in Pakistan with more cables to be introduced if needed. She emphasized Pakistan’s digital ambitions and noted that global GDP forecasts project a $1.3 trillion boost from 5G adoption.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the significance of 5G adoption for long-term economic progress and technological progress, adding that sustainable progress could be achieved through Pakistan-Malaysia collaboration. Mikko Lavanti, Senior Vice President of Nokia Mobile Networks for the Middle East and Africa, reiterated Nokia’s support for Pakistan’s digital development, stressing that 5G was a “key driver” of economic growth.
The masterclass featured technical discussions, expert panels, and knowledge-sharing sessions, laying the groundwork for future digital advancements. PTA and MCMC reaffirmed their commitment to driving innovation and strengthening digital capabilities in both countries.
